Investigators with Sulphur Springs Fire Department say arsonists were responsible for a fire that destroyed a school bus belonging to Sulphur Springs Independent School District just after 10 p.m. Sunday night.
Investigator David James said the fire is related to two trash fires and a brush fire in the area of the bus facility Sunday night.
Two men, in their early to middle 20s, have been interviewed in connection with the fire that had fully engulfed the Blue Bird school bus by the time firefighters arrived, according to Investigator James who also said the fire started at the rear of the passenger compartment of the vehicle.
The bus, James said, was parked inside the fenced and locked bus compound and would not comment on how the arsonists were able to get inside the compound or what was used to start the fire.
Assistant Sulphur Springs School Superintendent Randy Reed said bus #37 was a 1990 model and was parked at the back of the compound and not in daily use but was available for use if needed.
Reed said the interior of the bus, built of aluminum and fire retardant materials, was totally gutted. He said the school district would be unable to place a dollar amount on the loss until after consulting with the insurance carrier.
Neighbors who had noticed a suspicious vehicle in the area about 10 p.m. noticed the fire.
Firefighters were within a block of the bus fire extinguishing a trash fire when the bus was set on fire and found the bus to be totally engulfed when they arrived.
Investigators said the suspects gave no indication as to why any of the fires, including the bus, were started.
Investigator James said no arrests have been made in the case and information on the two primary suspects along with a third will be turned over to the district attorney's office for prosecution on four separate second-degree felony charges of arson.
