Caution: Elderly urged to be aware of roofing scam making the rounds

Elderly Sulphur Springs residents are cautioned to be leery of unsolicited offers for work at their homes, as they have recently been targets of a roofing scam.

Thus far, only a few senior citizens are known to have fallen victim to the cons.

Sulphur Springs Police Chief Jim Bayuk is urging elderly residents to call 911 if they are approached by someone offering to perform roofing services.

Police say the would-be roofers approach older residents in their yards or at their homes. They offer to do roofing repairs for a fee, which they require up front. After the fee is paid, they do not return to render services as agreed.

Bayuk cautions residents to be wary of any unsolicited offers for services or work; and to check out the workers and their company before contracting with them or giving them any money for services.

Police said so far they don’t have any concrete information which would point to any specific suspects nor do they have vehicle information.

Bayuk said to call 911 and let police check out the sales person, and strongly cautions residents not to let them inside their homes.
