Sulphur Bluff will be well represented at the National Beta Convention this summer. SB Beta students advanced to nationals after earning second in scrapbook and third in character skit categories at the Jan. 10-11 state convention in Dallas.

“We are so excited because we will be advancing in both events at National Convention this June in Richmond, Va.,” explained Tressie South, cosponsor of SB Beta with Kathy Hogue. “This is the first year that character skit is a national competition, somewhat due to our club performing our skit last year at nationals. This helped other states to get an idea on how to perform a skit.”

The club’s five-minute character skit featured a script written around a “Duck Dynasty” theme; Instead of duck calls, the SB Beta actors had "Beta calls.” All 22 SB Beta Club members participated in the skit.

The students compiled a 195-page scrapbook utilizing a “Wheel Of Fortune — Beta Week” theme. It contains journaling, photos and other memorabilia from every after-school meeting, lunch meeting and service project, as well as all activities and information from each individual club member.

The Bluff also entered the banner competition, which tasked them with creating a banner that represents this year’s National Beta Club theme, "Making History With Beta.” The elegant banner, designed by senior Casey Gore, included the statement “We are here to serve by leading others. We may not make history world-wide, but we strive to make a positive impact in the history of every person's life. Most importantly, we are just average high school students trying to make a difference in this world. We are BETA members leaving our legacy."

“I am extremely proud of each of our 22 members. It was a bittersweet trip for me though, because this is the last state convention that our seniors will be with us,” South said.

This year’s SB Beta Club consists of seniors Darron Foster,  Sarah Williams, Katelyn McDonald, Erin Zeringue, Meagan Coberley, President Cheyenne Bryant, Reporter Kaci Powers, Shelby Williams, Vice President Landon Dorner, Tyler Raine and Secretary Casey Gore; juniors Kendra Jock, Raney Cortez, Kadee Anderson, Hunter Powers and Justin Goldsmith; and sophomores Skylar Evans, Tori Dorner, Hudson Northcutt, Taylor Self, Yesenia Castillo and Cody Vance.
