A 1950s-style Sock Hop fundraiser is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at Winnsboro Elementary School to help Diane Clelland raise the portion of the downpayment required for reconstructive surgery following a double mastectomy.

Clelland, aWinnsboro resident and teacher at the Winnsboro Christian Preschool, was diagnosed in July 2013 with breast cancer.

“Her cancer was caused by her own body producing too much estrogen and the cancer was found in the mammary glands of both breasts. One side was malignant and the other side was benign. She opted to remove both to keep from having to go through chemo or radiation,” said Amy Henderson, who is helping to coordinate the event.

Clelland has since undergone a double mastectomy to remove all of the cancer. She is scheduled to have reconstructive surgery Feb. 26.

A bake sale was held for Clelland Jan. 11, raising $930 to put toward her portion of the downpayment for the costly medical procedure.

“Mrs. Clelland has one daughter, three grandchildren and a husband, Bob, to live for and needs your  support and prayers. She still needs way more help than just the down payment. Her husband has to take off of work to be with her on the day of the surgery and be able to stay overnight there in Tyler, not to mention funds for eating on in the meantime,” Henderson noted.

Thus, Clelland’s friends are hosting the 1950s Sock Hop Jan. 25, to help with those expenses. All are invited to come dressed in 1950s attire to show their support for 52-year-old Clelland and her family.

The event will feature a Hula Hoop contest, Twist contest, Best Dressed Contest for adults and children, puppet shows, live and silent auctions, music by “The C, and food and snacks. Brisket sandwich dinners will be available for $7, a two hot dogs dinner for $5, nachos for $2 and cotton candy for $1.
