Am off-duty Texas Parks and Wildlife game warden in Delta County, 31-year-old Chris Fried was shot and seriously wounded Sunday evening as he was leaving the Cooper Wildlife Management area, according to Delta County Sheriff Ricky Smith.

“Late yesterday, he was hunting, bow hunting on the wildlife management area around Cooper Lake, in that area below the dam,” Sheriff Smith said. “We believe he was walking out, it was late, about 6 p.m., and he was shot.

“The bullet entered the left side of the frontal part of the chest, travelled across the chest and lodged in his left arm,” the sheriff continued. “He was transported to Hopkins County Memorial, stabilized, and then shipped on to Parkland where he underwent surgery last night and we believe he is stable now.”

Sheriff Smith and Chief Deputy Donnie Willingham both said they felt the shooting was accidental.

“We are inclined to believe that it is a non-intentional act,” Smith said. “We have identified a number of hunters in the area, we have interviewed them and we have some very high possibilities of who the shooter was. We’re not ready to release that, it still under investigation. We are very much inclined to believe it was not an intentional act.”

Sheriff Smith said investigation was continuing this morning and that information from that investigation will be submitted to District Attorney Will Ramsay and possibly referred to a grand jury.
