Two men were jailed for unlawful use of a criminal instrument after an interdiction officer found concealed cash in their car during a Tuesday morning traffic stop.

Martin Emmanuel Zambrano, 25, of Rio Grande City and Cenobio Perales Garza, 39, of Berwyn, Ill., were held at 6 a.m. Wednesday at the county jail on the third-degree felony charge.

Sulphur Springs Police Lt. Jason Ricketson stopped a Tourage Volkswagon at 9:59 a.m. at the 132 mile marker of Interstate 30 west for a traffic and equipment violation in. Garza was driving; Zambrano was the passenger.

A search of the car’s glove box showed duct-taped bundles of cash hidden behind it. Ricketson got his canine partner and the dog alerted on the area of the glove box during a sniff search. The bundles were removed and added up to $35,000. Ricketson, on arrest reports, indicated he believed the currency to be “proceeds of narcotics trafficking,” so he arrested both men.
