A fire destroyed half of a single-wide home on State Highway 19 Sunday morning and caused heavy smoke damage to the remainder of the structure; firefighters said the structure will likely be considered a total loss. No one was injured.

The local chapter of the American Red Cross helped the four-member family secure alternate lodging Sunday night, and is accepting donations of clothing to assist the residents.

Hopkins County, North Hopkins and Sulphur Springs firefighters were dispatched at 9:25 a.m. Sunday to 4509 State Highway 19, just north of FM 1537, where a single-wide residential structure was reported to be engulfed in flames. All occupants were reported to be out of the structure, according to dispatch reports.

When firefighters arrived, they reported the single-wide structure to be partially involved in flames. A second alarm was sounded, with Saltillo and Brinker Volunteer Fire Departments requested to respond.

Firefighters launched an exterior attack on the flaming structure, which was said to be in use but not occupied at the time of the fire. The firemen got the fire knocked down, with half of the structure completely destroyed and significant smoke damage sustained throughout. They went into overhaul phase and used thermal imaging equipment to check for “hot spots,” areas not visible to the eye where embers continued to smolder. Firemen also were able to remove some of the residents’ valuables from the structure, according to fire reports.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined. A county fire investigator will be assigned to examine the remains to try to determine cause.

The American Red Cross responded, working with other agencies to help secure temporary lodging for the two adults and two children, boys ages eight and 10, who lost all of their clothing and furniture in the blaze. Anyone who wants to help provide clothing can call Dawn or Moose Morgan at Star Country radio, 903-885-1546, for more information.
