For the last two years, Texas Tech alumni had gotten their guns — and their money — up when it came to flying their school’s flag downtown. This year, the Red Raiders faithful were topped by the blue and gold (and greenbacks) of Texas A&M-Commerce.

Texas A & M University-Commerce alumni and university President Dr. Dan Jones will be on hand at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the courthouse flagpole to show their school spirit and raise their school flag.

TAMU-C alumni won the bid to have their school flag flown for a week downtown with a pledge of $4,750 which was made last Thursday during the bidding that was hosted by STAR Country 95.9.  The money goes to  the Lights of Life campaign organzied by the Hopkins County Health Care Foundation.

The Texas A&M-Commerce alumni group outbid the Texas Tech group that had been successful in winning the bid for the last two years.

“Texas A&M-Commerce was determined this year, so we pulled out all the stops,” said Brad Williams, an alumnus of the university.

All TAMU-Commerce and  East Texas State University alumni are encouraged to join in the flag-raising that will take place. The Texas A&M University-Commerce flag will fly over Thanksgiving weekend and not be taken down until Monday, Dec. 2.

Also, in conjunction with the raising of the winning flag, a hamburger lunch will be served in the First United Methodist Church gym from 11 a.m.  to  1 p.m. The lunch was to have been on the square, but predicted cold weather has moved the lunch into the church gym.A grilled hamburger, chips, cookies and drink costs $5. Patrons can drive through the back church parking lot and pick up their order or go inside to eat.  All proceeds benefit the 2013-2014 Lights of Life Campaign which is raising money this year to help Hopkins County Memorial Hospital purchase a new bone density machine, three new ICU beds and a UV room disinfection unit.

Also, tickets remain on sale for a chance to win a 2014 Corvette. Only 1,500 tickets will be sold for $100 each.
