On Saturday, Nov. 16, Sulphur Springs Middle School hosted 456 students from 12 schools across the region for the annual Texas Music Educators Association Region 4 Middle School Band auditions.

Students prepared two musical selections in advance, preparing throughout the fall semester and putting in many extra hours of work. Twenty-seven judges were utilized in nine audition rooms. Auditions began at 10 a.m. and lasted until 3:30 p.m.
"With the new facilities here in Sulphur Springs, we felt SSMS would be a great place to hold the auditions," said Spencer Emmert, head director at SSMS. "We had tons of positive comments and everyone was impressed with both the facilities and how smooth the contest ran."
SSMS had 71 students who auditioned.
"We had a goal of 40 students being placed in the region bands. We exceeded that by getting 42 in," Emmert said. "We are beyond proud of the hard work that all of our students put forth for the auditions. Representing our school is a big responsibility and these kids exceeded all of our expectations."
Students' preparation was guided and led by the entire SSMS band staff with Robert McDaniel and Jennifer Turner working extensively with Emmert to prepare each student. These students will attend a clinic and give a concert on Saturday, Dec. 7, at Mount Pleasant High School.
The concert is set to begin at 4 p.m.
According to Emmert, the new private lesson program at SSMS has been a huge success and is also a contributing factor to these students' successes at All-Region. All SSMS band students are encouraged to sign up to be included in the lesson program. Enrollment is currently open for the spring semester.
