Yantis Masonic Lodge #382 will once again offer folks a chance to pit their shooting skills against those of others in a fun competition for a chance to win Thanksgiving turkeys next Saturday. Even better, the fun East Texas tradition will raise money for operating expenses for the lodge as well as charities in Yantis and the East Texas area.

The 23nd Annual Turkey Shoot kicks off at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 23 and will continue throughout the day until all of the turkeys have been awarded.

This East Texas tradition once again promises a fun-filled day of competition with three different ways to win a Thanksgiving turkey. Shooting events include skeet, .22-caliber rifle and pistol competitions. Shooters will have ample opportunities to compete and, hopefully, take home a prize turkey this year. Rifle and shotgun shells are furnished. Those planning to shoot a pistol will need to bring their own shells.

As they have done for the past 23 years, the Masons and their wives are preparing plenty of mouth-watering food and homemade desserts, which will be available to participants throughout the day for donations.

The annual turkey shoot is the primary fund raiser for the Yantis Masonic Lodge. All proceeds from the shoot will once again be used for Lodge #382 operating expenses and also to help fund the many worthwhile charities supported by Masons in the Yantis and East Texas area.

“The public is invited, and your attendance will support a very worthwhile cause. While you’re there, make sure to sample some of the delicious food, compete for a turkey and enjoy the activities as the competition heats up during the day,” said Gordon Krantz, Yantis Masonic Lodge # 382 secretary.

The shoot will again take place at the Stephens Farm, the original location of the event. The shoot,  for legal purposes, was hosted by Winnsboro Gun Club in Winnsboro from 2005 to 2007. Much to the delight of many return participants, the turkey shoot returned to the Stephens Farm east of Yantis in 2008, and has been held there each year since.

To find the Stephens Farm, take FM 2966 east in Yantis. Continue on FM 2966 for 1.3 miles, then turn right onto County Road 1840. The farm is about 0.06 of a mile down CR 1840.  Look for the signs.

Founded in June 1873, Yantis Lodge #382 is a member of the Grand Lodge of Texas, which annually contributes to the support of both state and national Masonic charities.
