A hamburger cookout will be hosted Friday just off the square to raise funds for the Boys & Girls Club.
The lunch is being sponsored from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. by Alliance, City National and Guaranty Bond banks in the Alliance Bank parking lot, located on Atkins Street, just north of City National Bank.
For $6, patrons will get a hamburger, chips, a drink and dessert.
To place a pre-order, call 903-335-1520. Delivery is available.
All proceeds from the hamburger cookout will to the Boys & Girls Club “for general operating funds.”
The BGC currently serves 30 kids. Enrollment is still going on, but will end this month, according to BGC Program Development Coordinator Haley Reynolds.
Although the BGC is for kindergarten aged students and up, those most served by the program are third through sixth graders. The club even offers college preparatory assistance, taking kids for college visits and helping fill out financial aid forms. Most seniors aren’t taking advantage of this availability until about three months until they are due — crunch time.
“We are working on a more varied program that draws in a more diverse group of students,” BGC Executive Director Ayana Pryor noted said during an interview shortly before school started back this year.
The greatest needs at the club are for tutors, mentor counselors, people willing to share their crafts and lend their skills and knowledge to improve the building or teach youth.
