Odell to seek reelection as Pct. 2 commissioner

Mike Odell has announced he will be a candidate for another term as Hopkins County Precinct 2 Commissioner.

Odell, who is completing his first term in office after succeeding Burke Bullock in the Precinct 2 post, said he is really enjoying what he is doing but he has a lot left to do.
“It’s been an experience for sure,” Odell said. “I thought I could do a lot more when I got in here. You get in here and you find out that things have gotten so expensive; money doesn’t go as far as it used to with buying material for the roads.
“We’ve got a lot accomplished since I’ve been in here,” he continued. “We had 220 miles of roads in this precinct and my goal was to try to get 100 miles done with chip-seal in the first four years; and we’ve got over 50 miles done in two years going on nine months. Given another term, I think I can be close to that 220.”
Odell said that being county commissioner is not just maintaining roads; the commissioner is also responsible for financial management of the county.
“We had to cut the budget the first [year] I was a commissioner and people don’t like that but it’s been crawling up on Hopkins County for four or five years and nobody wanted to face it,” he said. “It something that was necessary to get done, I know nobody likes to lose personnel or lose money, and I voted against the budget last year because I didn’t agree with everything. I’ve lost my vote up there several times and that’s fine, that’s what the people put us in there for - to voice your opinion on what you think is best for the people of the county and that’s what I try to do.”
The incumbent commissioner said that while members of the commissioners court may not always agree, they do have an excellent working relationship that has enabled the county to overcome serious financial obstacles over the last two years.
He says he is looking forward to another term as Precinct 2 commissioner and to continue his work in helping manage county government and to reach his goal of providing chip-seal surface to all the roads in his precinct.
Mike Odell and his wife Rose have two children, a daughter Jill and a son Cody, and three grandchildren.
