A Sunday morning fire caused damage to Saltillo Store, a staple in the small eastern Hopkins County community.
The cause of the blaze is still under investigation, but county fire investigators believe the fire started in a storage room.
A U.S. Highway 67 resident at 7:13 a.m. Sunday reported the store, located across the street from the Post Office, just west of Saltillo Volunteer Fire Department and just southwest of Saltillo school, was on fire.
Hopkins County, Pickton-Pine Forest, Dike and Saltillo firefighters and deputies were dispatched to the location. When Saltillo VFD members arrived, they reported flames could be seen coming out the vents on the top of the store. When Hopkins County firefighters arrived, they reported the fire to be in the attic and roofing area of the store.
Firefighters were able to make a quick attack, containing the fire to one side of the building.
“They got a quick stop on it and got it out pretty quickly,” said Hopkins County Fire Marshal Steve Caudle. “There is limited fire damage to the one side, but there is heat and smoke damage throughout.”
The damage should allow for rebuilding if the owners so choose. The store was insured.
No one was reported to be at work in the building when the fire occurred.
County fire investigators had yet to make a determination as to the cause of the fire, but further investigation is planned.
