Two rural school districts during their regular August meeting tonight will discuss budgetary matters and consider setting dates for public meetings prior to adoption of a budget and tax rate for the 2013-14 school year.
Como-Pickton Consolidated Independent School District trustees will hold a budget workshop at 5 p.m. Monday, just prior to the 6 p.m. start of the regular school board meeting in the high school library.
Trustees will be asked to consider approving an employee handbook, student handbook and code of conduct and an appraisal calendar during the portion of the meeting dedicated to curriculum and instruction. The career and technology education director also is slated to give a report on that program.
Among the business and finance reports to be presented is a report from the maintenance/transportation director. That’s also when the board will be asked to consider a proposed tax rate for 2013 tax year, set a date for the public meeting for adoption of the budget and tax rate, and pay scales for the 2013-14 school year, bids for gasoline and diesel, a telephone consultation agreement with Eichelbaum Wardell and regular monthly business and finance reports. The board is also slated to discuss and possibly consider giving compensation for extra days for coaches.
The superintendent is scheduled to present preliminary accountability ratings for the 2012-13 year for Como-Pickton CISD and Holy Highway, which are paired together for annual state ratings; annual progress reports; professional development schedule for August 2013; an update on the prekindergarten program; update on furnishings for a new building; and custodial/maintenance uniforms.
The board then is expected to go into executive session to discuss personnel. As of Monday, the district still had five positions to fill. They are still in need of a cafeteria worker, bus driver, elementary bilingual teacher, junior high history teacher/coach and a speech language pathologist for contracted services during the 2013-14 school year. The board will then reconvene in open session to vote on any items pushed forward from the closed session.
Yantis Independent School District trustees during their 7 p.m. meeting in Yantis ISD cafeteria are scheduled to hear financial reports, then be asked to approve a date for the public meeting for budget and tax rate adoption, approve budget amendments and purchase of attendance credits for Chapter 41 status.
Student and faculty handbooks are to be reviewed, and a student code of conduct presented for board approval.
Also on the agenda for board consideration Monday night are student transfers, a CSCOPE waiver, legal counsel for the 2013-14 school year, a mineral lease agreement and extracurricular status for Wood County 4-H.
At the end of the meeting, the board will meet in executive session to discuss candidates recommended for district employment by school officials. The board will then reconvene in open session to take action on those personnel items.
