Sulphur Springs Independent School District has two activities planned next week to address emergency preparedness.
Monday, Aug. 5 through Friday, Aug. 9, approximately 40 members from district and campus teams will receive Community Emergency Response Training, a comprehensive hands-on 24-hour training course. Afternoon sessions will be held in the Board Room at SSISD Administration Building, 631 Connally St.
The course will be taught by Craig “Moose” and Dawn Morgan, certified instructors who will educate participants about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and train them in basic disaster response skills. Fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations are a few of the skills to be taught in the training. A graduation ceremony for the course will take place on Friday afternoon at the close of the last session.
Tuesday morning, Aug. 6, the district will also have an emergency preparedness drill at Sulphur Springs High School which will allow first responders to test systems and procedures for maximum school safety.
SSISD police officers, in close coordination and collaboration with the city of Sulphur Springs Police Department, Sulphur Springs Fire Department, Hopkins County Emergency Medical Services and Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office and Texas Department of Public Safety, are conducting the mock drill.
“Entities were invited and participated in at least one or more planning sessions to ensure details of the exercise will be a beneficial learning experience for each of the first responders. A debriefing and post action report will be conducted following the exercise to review lessons learned and ways to improve campus safety,” according to SSISD Director of Human Resources and Communications Rusty Harden.
Students and community members are asked to wait until Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 6, to conduct business in the main building of SSHS complex, so as not to interfere with the emergency preparedness drill being conducted at SSHS.
