A 43-year-old Montana woman was jailed on a felony charge Saturday morning for abandoning her daughter at an E-Z Mart store.
According to Sulphur Springs Police reports Yvette Marie Powell, 43, of Hamilton, Mont., was arrested at 7:30 a.m. on Interstate 30 at County Road 3451 for child abandonment, a second-degree felony offense.
She reportedly stopped at the gas station just off Interstate 30 at the corner of East Shannon Road and Jefferson Street Saturday morning. Her 8-year-old daughter got out at the store and went into the restroom. Powell left the store while her daughter was still in the restroom, driving away east on Interstate 30 in a GMC Suburban.
Police were contacted. Officers located the GMC Suburban on I-30 near CR 3451 around 6:15 a.m. Saturday and detained it. Police, on arrest reports, noted the driver — Powell — to be very agitated while talking to officers. When asked to answer some questions, refused. She was placed under arrest. Once in handcuffs, she tried to kick an officer before she could be placed into a patrol unit. She also was noted for trying to kick jailers upon arrival at Hopkins County Law Enforcement Center to be booked into jail.
The child was released to Child Protective Services personnel. The SUV was released at Powell’s request to the woman’s traveling companion.
Powell — who is also known by the last names Contreas, Kraus and Giampovolo — remained in the county jail early Monday morning in lieu of $20,000 bond on the felony child abandonment charge, according to jail reports.
