Como-Pickton cheerleading squads and mascot came home from the Universal Cheer Association Cheer Camp with one All-American Cheerleader, a Leadership Award, recognition in three dance contests and a trophy for being among the three top squads overall.
“I am extremely proud of my girls and our mascot. They all did an amazing job,” said Meg Garrett, C-P cheer sponsor. “Both squads came home winners.”
Senior and captain of the varsity squad Aylin Cruz and junior Ashton Teafatiller both were nominated as All-American cheerleaders. After competing against many other cheerleaders, Teafatiller was named All-American by the end of the camp.
Senior William Ramirez, who serves as Big E (the mascot), received the Leadership Award, which is voted on by the other mascots and is considered the most prestigious award at camp.
The C-P varsity cheerleading squad consisting of Kaylea Leach, Jasmine Mejia, Capt. Aylin Cruz, Yasmin Diosdado, Mikayla Stone, Bridget Nabors, mascot William Ramirez, Julia Mackey and Ashton Teafatiller were awarded a trophy for coming in third overall. They also received a superior ribbon in the home dance competition and won first for their spirit line dance.
The C-P junior varsity cheerleading squad placed second on their camp dance and received a trophy. Making up the JV squad are Emily Osborne, Maritza Velasco, Honour Cain, Karacole Ponder, Jovi Bucio, Erin Watts and Erika Flowers.
