A near head-on crash of two boats north of the FM 515 east bridge on Lake Fork Monday claimed the lives of two men and left a 10-year-old child in critical condition in a Dallas hospital.
Texas Game Warden Captain Quint Balkcom said the crash happened just before dark, about 8:40 p.m.
“We had two boats travelling on one of the marked boat lanes on Lake Fork, north of the FM 515 east bridge. The boats struck each other, they were both on plane, which means they were moving at a travelling speed,” Balkcom said. “Both of the operators were killed in the crash and a child under 13 was critically injured and flown to a Dallas hospital, where he was still in critical condition this morning.”
Several people were fishing in the area and saw the crash happen and quickly took action.
“It was a combination of people that were fishing and observed it,” Balkcom said. “There were some people actually on the water and saw it and contacted the sheriff's office. We were able to get on the water rather quickly and, with Alba and Land's End fire departments, were able to get everyone out of the water. We didn't have a victim recovery; the silver lining is we got everybody off the water immediately. The tragic part is we did lose two people in the accident.”
Balkcom said there were a number of agencies who aided in the rescue operation, including Wood County Sheriff's Office, Alba Fire Department and Land's End Rescue as well as witnesses who took action.
Balkcom said efforts are underway to recover the boats so investigators can determine what may have caused the fatal crash.
“We have recovered one of the vessels already and the Texas Game Warden Dive Team is in the process of floating the other vessel so we can complete our investigation,” he said.
The names of those killed and injured were not immediately released.
