After more than five years, the redevelopment of the square is almost complete, City Manager Marc Maxwell said Thursday.
The first block of Jefferson Street, running along the north side of the courthouse, has been repaved. Today, crews were working to finish the construction of Jefferson Street up to the Church Street intersection.
The street is scheduled to reopen for traffic on Friday.
The redevelopment of the intersection itself will be postponed until after the Independence Day celebration on June 29 on the square, Maxwell said.
“The celebration is a complicated affair,” Maxwell continued, “and we'd like the festivities to go as smoothly as possible.”
In addition to the redevelopment, cameras will be placed at the intersection in an attempt to deter large trucks from navigating the square. Trucks will not be able to turn at the intersection and will be forced to exit the downtown area on Connally Street.
According to Maxwell, until the downtown street construction can be resumed, the city work crews will focus on repairing streets and cleaning obstructed areas around town.
