Sulphur Springs Independent School District this week got a little closer to having a full staff hired for the 2013-14 school year. District trustees approved one summer contract, six new hires and two personnel changes. They also approved letters of resignation, releasing three staff members at the Monday meeting.
Lisa Robinson was offered a summer contract to act as curriculum coordinator, stationed at the Administration Building. The contract was for the summer due to her mid-term hiring date.
Sulphur Springs Middle School will lose Jill Sapaugh as English teacher and Linda Mathes, a special education aide. Kristy Johnson resigned as physical education teacher at Douglas Intermediate School.
All three resigned well ahead of the 45-day contract release deadline of July 11. Schools are required to set and officially note a contract release date by which school employees can apply and more easily be released from their contracts. The date is to be no more than 45 days prior to the first day of instruction for the upcoming school year. After that date, districts do not have to let employees renege on contracts.
SSISD attempts to work with staff if they submit a request for release of contract after the 45-day contract release date and generally do release them, provided doing so does not result in a staff shortage in a position that can’t readily be filled. Assistant Superintendent Randy Reed told board members at this week’s regular trustees meeting that day this summer is July 11.
Hired at SSMS to teach math was Brandi McCain. New staff at Sulphur Springs High School will include John Bimmerle, tech specialist; Elizabeth Crutcher, choir instructor; and Justin Horschig, history teacher and coach. Christine Rogers was approved as a special education aide at Douglas and Ruanne Horton to teach third grade at Sulphur Springs Elementary.
Veronica Arnold, an SSMS math teacher, will move to the Administration Building to serve as assistant director of food services for the district. DeMarcus Johnson will move from Douglas, where he’s been serving as a P.E. aide, to SSMS, where he will be a special education aide.
Postings for job vacancies at SSISD can be found under the employment menu on the district website: http://www.ssisd.net.
