Sulphur Springs High School is officially the first runner-up for the 4A State Academic UIL Championship. The school had two first place teams and one second place team, and several students recognized at the state contest for individual achievement too, according to SSHS UIL Coordinator Gina Wilder.
“The hard work and dedication of both the competitors and their coaches proved to be most fruitful! These groups had a goal and they devoted themselves to achieving it. Words cannot express how proud I am of all of the UIL competitors,” Wilder said.
In spelling and vocabulary, Ashley Clegg placed first, Jacqueline Tovar Yanez placed third and Rachel Mattison placed sixth individually. The team, which also includes Ivon Gonzalez, won first place and had the highest score out of all five divisions at the meet. Gail Herman is their sponsor.
In literary criticism, Madison Millsap placed first, Will Horton placed third and Carrolin Rodgers placed fourth individually. Jessica Boyd and McKenzie Hohenberger completed the first place team. Gail Herman is their sponsor.
In accounting, Jarred Cowley placed second and Evan Meek placed fourth individually. They, along with Justin Mathews, Devin Mitchell and Abby Tipps, earned second place as a team. Jenny Arledge is their sponsor.
Also, Shawn Tucker competed in the state meet in computer science and Ariel Gonzalez competed in social studies. Their sponsors are Gina Wilder and Beth Grafton, respectively.
“If you see any of the kids, please brag on them. The deserve it!” urges a jubilant Wilder.
