Sulphur Springs High School will again be hosting its annual Special Olympics Meet this spring. Organizers for the May 1 event say the 4th Annual Special Olympics Meet will include all of the usual track and field events, as well as a special recognition ceremony.
“This year, we would like to do something special for our alumni of Sulphur Springs High School. We would like to take a little time during the day to honor previous members of the Special Olympics teams of the past,” said Jeana Penny, a Special Olympics coordinator. “I would want it to be only ones that participated in Special Olympics. If they are interested, please have them contact Jeana Penny at the high school at 903-885-2158.”
Penny is asking for former SSHS special olympians who plan to attend to contact her no later than April 26 to ensure their information is included so their names can be called for recognition during the event.
Opening ceremonies are schedule for 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 1, at the SSHS track with the parade of athletes, but all participants will need to be there by 9 a.m. for check-in.
“We are expecting around 100 athletes from SS and other districts to participate. We have had an amazing response — as always — from our community to help with sponsoring items to give to our participants and coaches,” said Penny.
Some of the schools that have confirmed participation include the following Sulphur Springs campuses: Lamar Primary, Sulphur Springs Elementary, Douglas Intermediate, middle school and high school; as well as Rains, Commerce and Paris schools.
Community members are encouraged to come out and show their support of the special olympians by cheering them on from the stands.
