Saltillo High School came home from the Conference 1A District 18 Academic UIL Springs Meet held recently with 14 individual awards and two team awards. A couple of students were also recognized for wins in more than one event.
Earning first place honors in current issues and events was Clayton Jones. His win coupled with the participation points from Saltillo High teammates Tucker Johnson, Nick Boekhorst and Justin Barnett earned the current issues and events team a second place award.
Tucker Johnson also was recognized for his fourth place finish in persuasive speaking. Others placing in persuasive speaking included Carlos Marquez for his third place win and Cade Daniel for his sixth place finish.
Justin Barnett also won the chemistry contest and finished fourth in science. Geoffrey Holter won third place in science. Their scores, coupled with those of teammates Justin Tippit and Edward Jaime resulted in an overall second place team win in science.
Tippit was also recognized for his fourth place finish in number sense and fifth place finish in mathematics.
In journalism events, Chelsea Moore won second place honors and Mackenzie Johnson finished fifth in feature writing, Ragan Hicks won third place honors in news writing, and Victoria Stretcher was recognized for her fourth place finish in headline writing.
Also recognized for placing fifth in informative speaking at the district meet was Wendy Perea.
Students who scored first through third place individually or were part of a first place district team at the district meet in March qualified to compete at the regional academic UIL contest, which is being held this weekend in Nacogdoches.
