The pre-kindergarten program at Como-Pickton Elementary will be structured a bit differently next year. District trustees this month gave approval to holding two pre-k sessions each day, which opens up a few additional spaces for more students to enroll in the program.
“We will offer a morning and afternoon pre-k,” explains Dr. Kay Handlin, Como-Pickton Consolidated Independent School District superintendent.
Approved pre-k children who reside in Como will attend classes during the morning while approved Pickton pre-k students will report to school for the afternoon session.
Parents enrolling their children should note, however, that their student will only be eligible to ride the bus once during the day. Buses will only be run their usual morning and afternoon routes, so parents of C-P pre-k students will be responsible for their students’ transportation at midday.
Como pre-k students can get on the bus in the morning along with other C-P students. When their day ends around lunch time, the Como parents will be responsible for picking them up. Parents of Pickton pre-k students will be responsible for getting their child to the school to start the afternoon session; these students would be able to to ride the bus home, along with other C-P students at the end of the school day.
While the annual pre-k registration was held last month, Dr. Handlin said the district will be accepting applications for a limited time until the additional slots are filled per session. That includes for “two-way dual language students.”
Parents of Como or Pickton children who will be 4 on or before Sept. 1 should contact Karla Jacks at the C-P elementary office to apply. Seats will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.
Applications are screened to see if the applicant meets certain eligibility criteria. The registration application must be filled out completely in order for the child to be considered for enrollment at Como-Pickton school.
The parent or guardian who reports to the school will be required to bring the following items to registrer:
- One document showing proof of district residency; a utility bill such as an electric, water or gas bill will suffice
- Applicant child’s birth certificate
- Applicant child’s Social Security card
- Applicant child’s up-to-date immunization record
- Doctor’s notes concerning any allergy or health needs the child may have
- Custodial documents or court orders related to the child
