North Hopkins High School came in second out of 14 schools at the District 17-A Academic UIL Contest. Overall, the school had 17 of the 47-member UIL team place in the top six at the district meet, earning 19 individual honors and had three teams recognized.
A dozen students placed high enough either individually or as part of a team at the March 28 district meet in Blue Ridge to advance to the regional contest April 19-20 at Stephen F. Austin State University. Only students placing first, second or third individually or who are part of a first place or alternate team qualify to advance. Two students also were noted for placing in and advancing to region in more than one event.
Selena Santana earned first place in feature writing and third place in news writing, qualifying her to compete at the regional meet in both categories.
Allegra Thomas earned third place in ready writing, in which she advances, and placed fourth in computer science.
However, Thomas will also advance in computer science, as she was a member of the the second place computer science team which was named as an alternate, qualifying them to advance. Jessie Williams was recognized for placing fifth, while Geraldine Lopez and Mason Virgel tied for sixth in computer science.
The speaking team won first place, while the spelling team placed second. In spelling, Denise Calixto won second place individual honors.
Madison Wenrick won first place and Ray Brown second in Lincoln-Douglas debate, advancing both to region.
Other students advancing with second place wins included Chelsey Crouch in news writing and Alan Morehead in poetry.
Earning third place and advancing to region are Leydie Franco in informative speaking and Elizabeth Wilburn in poetry.
Recognized for their fourth place finishes at the district meet were Alex Roller in social studies and Rheston Sills in persuasive speaking.
Fifth place finishers included Miriam Castro in informative speaking and Marlee Minton in accounting.
Faith Schwen was recognized for placing sixth in feature writing.
North Hopkins’ One-Act Play also advanced from the zone contest to district competition March 22 at Paris Junior College. Jesse Williams, Trenton Dodd and Rheston Sills were named to the All-Star Cast, while Elizabeth Wilburn, Abreenanna Bisenius and Blake Adams earned honorab
