Faith Huffman, Sulphur Springs News-Telegram news editor, was honor Saturday by the Grand Lodge of Texas and Yantis Masonic Lodge No. 382 with the 2013 Community Builder award at the Masonic Lodge in Yantis.
“This prestigious award was designed by the Grand Lodge of Texas to enable local lodges to recognize outstanding non-Masons who have distinguished themselves through their service to the community, to local or state government, to their church or synagogue, or to humanity,” said Lodge 382 Secretary Gordon Krantz. “Thus, the award is presented annually to individuals who, although they have never been initiated into Masonry, have followed the same precepts, ideals and standards that have been established for Masonic behavior.”
Krantz noted Huffman's coverage of eight school districts and crime, emergency services as well as special assignments such as the United Way, Relay for Life and other community-oriented projects. Lodge members expressed appreciation for Huffman's coverage over the last 5-6 years of their fundraising activities, which have included annual turkey shoot and a at thanksgiving and has included a fish fry in the spring, which allow them to provide scholarships for local students.
A small gathering of Huffman's friends and family joined her at the banquet Yantis Masons hosted Saturday evening at the Lodge Hall. The Masons' wives prepared a meal of chicken, potatoes, rolls, corn on the cob, vegetables, various salads, and desserts of red velvet cake and pecan pie.
