For the first time in recent history, jurors are hearing a criminal case in Hopkins County's 62nd District Court.
The eight man, four woman jury began hearing testimony the trial of Dustin Scott on charges of assault on a public servant.
Not since before Judge Jim Thompson was elected to the 62nd district court in 1974 has a criminal trial been held in that court.
Recently elected District Judge Will Biaird is hearing this case and Eighth District Attorney Will Ramsay, also recently elected, is prosecuting the case. Defense attorney is Clay Johnson.
The case had originally been filed in the Eighth Judicial District but Judge Eddie Northcutt, who took the bench on Jan. 1, asked Judge Biaird to hear the case due to a potential conflict of interest.
The 62nd State District court typically hears civil proceedings.
