SULPHUR SPRINGS – The 15th annual Children’s Concert will be presented by the Sulphur Springs Symphony League’s Northeast Texas Symphony Orchestra this Friday, March 8.

Thirty-seven professional musicians of the League’s chamber orchestra, conducted by Dr. Douglas Bakenhus, will perform in the Hopkins County Regional Civic Center auditorium, beginning at 1 p.m.
Annually the Symphony League invites over 1,400 students from public, private, parochial and home-school environments from Hopkins County area, and some from outside of the county, to attend this unique program. Schools attending this year include CHESS, Douglas, Holy Hearts, Miller Grove, North Hopkins, Saltillo, Sulphur Springs Elementary, Water Oak and Yantis.
“This distinctive event has been the catalyst for more than a few students to take up instruments at an early age, and some students continue through college to become highly accomplished musicians, music teachers, and even professional artists,” said Linda Galligher, event coordinator. “About a dozen exceptional students from the high school instrumental music program will have the honor of playing side by side with our professionals for one of the music selections.  In addition to live music programs, the Symphony League provides scholarships, instruments, and other support to many promising students.”
Symphony League President Dwight Corley said, “Seeing how much these students enjoy the Children’s Concert always lifts our spirits and re-affirms our confidence in these young leaders of tomorrow."

What a lovely comment. The league really does care about the arts and have been so consistent with their support. I can't think of another town our size that has such a program. We are very lucky.

Kudos to the SSSL for supporting a music instruments program for young aspiring students. My school programs taught me: how to read music, sing different parts, and learn to play 3 different instruments. I hope all the readers to do what they can to support this effort. Scour your attics for old forgotten instruments, pick them up at pawn shops, yard sales, etc. And donate, donate, donate. Thank you.
