As the deadline for filing for a place on the Sulphur Springs City Council ballot drew near Friday afternoon a third candidate signed up to oppose former mayor and long-time Place 4 Councilman Freddie Taylor, while another filed to challenge Gary Spraggins in the Place 5 seat.
Charles Oxford, who served one term on the council (2008-2011) and lost in a bid for the council seat held by Clay Walker last year, submitted the formal documents to City Secretary Gale Roberts about 3 p.m. Friday to run for Place 4.
In seeking reelection to the council in 2011, Oxford lost to John Sellers by a vote of 663 to 376. In his challenge to Clay Walker last year, Oxford again lost, this time with a vote of 507 to 274.
Just before 5 p.m. Friday, Emily Glass, a compliance officer at City National Bank, filed for the Place 5 seat to be decided in the May election. The seat is currently held by Spraggins, another former mayor.
The drawing for the order of names on the ballot for the city council election will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, at the Municipal Building in the Council Room at 125 South Davis St.
