Investigators with Hopkins County Sheriff's Department and the Texas Rangers are investigating the discovery of possible human remains found near a State Highway 11 west residence Wednesday afternoon.
“It is believed to be, could be human remains,” said Chief Sheriff's Investigator Lewis Tatum. “
Sheriff's officers, Sulphur Springs police investigators and Texas Ranger John Vance were dispatched to the area where the remains were found.
We did a 'grid search' of the area to see if we could find anything else,” Tatum continued. “At this time, we are not for sure exactly what we do have but the Texas Ranger is going to take it to an anthropologist to see if we do have human remains.”
The investigator a decision on where to go next will be based on the findings of the anthropologist.
Tatum said the skeletal remains did not initially give any indication to size, age or gender.
“The remains we found, if they are human, do not look like they were very big or older human,” the investigator said. “It looks small. The first thing we've got to do is to verify what we have and how long it's been there. We are just uncertain at this time.”
Along with Texas Rangers and Sulphur Springs police investigators, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has offered assistance and is standing by if needed in any investigation.
