School Boards: SSISD, Yantis trustees have election items on agendas

Trustees at both Sulphur Springs and Yantis schools will meet tonight in their respective districts to tackle a number of routine items.


    Both districts are slated to officially call for and set specifics for the May 11 trustee election, including election judges and staff.

    At the 6 p.m. meeting of Sulphur Springs Independent School District trustees, the board will also be asked to consider approving two resolutions: one designating March 4-8 as Texas Public Schools Week and another for a grant.
    Director of Elementary Education Betty Lawson is slated to present to the board several pages detailing activities slated at each campus for Public Schools Week as well as information on when open houses will be held at the various campuses. This year’s theme is “Imagine, Explore, Discover.”
    The second resolution is for the board’s approval to submit two grants applications.
    The first application, “R^3 — Respond and Recover with Radios,” would be sent to the Texas Criminal Justice Division’s Justice Advisory Committee for digital interoperable radios for principals and district emergency operations team members, which would allow campus-to-campus communications and with local and state law enforcement via digital radios. The district is requesting up to 55 radios and a repeater tower.
    The second application for a “Safety First” for Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention grant asks for an additional security resources officer who would rotate between Sulphur Springs Elementary School and the three primary campuses. That application would be sent to the Office of the Governor, Criminal Justice Division.
    Policy updates regarding proposed revisions to the EIC local policy regarding academic achievement class raking, EIF local policy regarding academic achievement for graduation and FMG local policy regarding  student travel will be presented for board approval.
    Also for board approval will be an application for staff development through subject training waiver which would be sent to Texas Education Agency; a Head Start Program Option and Design proposal noting center-based as the only option for Head Start students; and budget amendments.
    Administrative reports to be presented for board information include the January Head Start director’s report and Policy Council reports; and annexes to the district emergency operations plan.
    At the end of the meeting, SSISD trustees are slated to go into executive session to discuss and consider hiring a human resources/communications director, and any other personnel or real property matters presented for board discussion or consideration. The board will then reconvene in open session to take action on those items discussed during during the closed session.
    The SSISD school board meeting begins at 6 p.m. Monday in the board room of the district administration meeting, 631 Connally St.

Yantis ISD
    At 7 p.m. in Yantis, trustees will be asked to approve all relevant election information, including voting hours and locations, judges, clerks, offices to be voted on, early voting locations and times, and an agreement with the city of Yantis for a joint election.
    Yantis trustees will also hear information on asbestos and  mold remediation; a door access control system; and facilities improvements for batting cages, storage and concessions.
    The superintendent’s reports will include a robotics presentation, update on school board objectives, campus report and the powerlifting team. Financial reports will also be given.
    At the end of the meeting, the board is slated to enter into executive session to consider  discuss renewal or approval of the following administrative and related contracts: the superintendent; high school and elementary principals; counselor; business manager; technology director; and superintendent’s, business and high school secretaries. The board can also discuss any additional personnel matters presented during the closed session.
    The board will then reconvene in open session to approve, deny, table or take other action required on items discussed during the executive session.
    The Yantis ISD trustees meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Monday in the school cafeteria.
