Son of longtime SSISD trustee Dr. Bill Dietze signs up for May school board election

As of Tuesday morning, filings for the May 9 trustees elections at local school districts was moving slow, with only three districts reporting any candidates at all.

Two individuals had filed with elections official Judy Gregg for the two full-term seats on Sulphur Springs Independent School District Board of Education as of 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Incumbent Don Sapaugh handed in his paperwork Monday announcing his intention to seek a second term on the board. Sapaugh currently serves as president of the school board.

This morning, Jason Dietze signed up to run for one of the two at-large seats to be determined in the May 9 election. Dietze, son of former long-time SSISD board of trustees member Dr. William E. Dietze, currently serves as youth pastor at First United Methodist church.

Judy Gillem is the other incumbent whose term expires in May. Monday night she said she has yet to decide whether she will seek another term on the board.

To file for candidacy for in the May 9 school board election, contact Judy Gregg weekdays during regular business hours through March 9 in the tax office at the SSISD Administration Building, 631 Connally St.

Como-Pickton CISD will also be holding a trustee election on May 9 for the two seats currently held be Beth Hankins and Mark Humphrey. Only Hankins had filed for re-election as of Tuesday morning, and no other challengers had filed to run for the two full-term seats on C-P’s board. Candidate filing will be conducted weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the business office. Contact Lenise Boseman at 903-488-3671 for more information.

North Hopkins’ candidate filing for two seats on that school board is being conducted weekdays during regular school business hours through March 8, and until 5 p.m. March 9, in the front office at the school. The offices are currently held by Robert McPherson, who has filed for re-election, and Robert Whaley. For more information, call 903-945-2192.

No candidates have emerged in Yantis ISD, where a trio of  three-year seats are up for election, or at Cumby ISD, which will hold an election for two seats.

In Yantis, one of those three seats had been held by Ron McKinney, who died prior to last month’s board meeting. The two remaining seats are held by Shannon Young and Boyd McCreight. Late Tuesday morning, no one had filed for candidacy for any of the three seats. Candidate filing will continue weekdays during regular school business hours through March 9 in the Yantis ISD business office. Contact Kristi Beech at 903-383-2463 for more information.
