With little if any discussion Tuesday evening, Sulphur Springs City Council quickly approved, on second and final reading, a request from Wayne Cooper to rezone property at the southeast corner of South Hillcrest and Main Street from light commercial zoning to heavy commercial. The zoning change will allow for new construction on the property.
Requests from two convenience store operators to have their properties rezoned passed on first reading by the council without discussion.
Henry Booker had asked that property at 1401 College Street be rezoned from light commercial to heavy commercial. A Super Handy convenience store is located at that address.
A request from Joe Bob Burgin for a similar zoning change for a Joe Bob's convenience store at 597 South League also gained quick approval of the council.
Action on an ordinance amending the zoning ordinance and providing for allowable land uses in the central business district was tabled in order for the city attorney to develop language going forward in updating the ordinance.
The council heard comments from four people before agreeing to postpone taking action on the proposal.
In a routine “housekeeping” matter, the council gave approval to submitting a request to become a Reservation System participant for the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs HOME funds.
