Awards for outstanding service and citizenship will be presented during the 22nd Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King JR. Awards Ceremonies at 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 21 at Morning Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.
Keynote speaker for the ceremonies, sponsored by East Caney Missionary Baptist Church and Hopkins County African American Leadership Conference will be Alva Adams Jr. of Arlington. Adams, a Sulphur Springs native, is district manager for the Chrysler Corporation.
Master of ceremonies will be Dr. Dan Jones, president of Texas A&M-Commerce.
Clayton McGraw will receive the MLK Man of the Year award and Patricia Cooper will be presented the MLK Woman of the Year Award.
The 2013 awards and honorees are: Spiritual, Audine Turman; Freedom Award, W.T. Allison and Gary Hall; Medical, Ester Crook; Spirit of Loyalty, Venda Wright; Humanitarian, Wal-Mart, Inc.; Spirit of Dependability, Rochele Scott-Miller; Legacy of King, J.D. Franklin; Spirit of Service, Barbara Moss; Spirit of Fellowship, W.C. Pryor.
Achievement awards will be presented to Dewayne Berry, Dee-Dee Berry, Marlon Alexander, Keiston Alexander, Melvin Person, Glenda Brown and Amiel Brown.
Other achievement awards include: King’s Kids to Jackie Jackson and Kyshia Johnson; Choice of Excellence to Claudia Boyd; Minister of the Year, Ken Pate; Leadership award, Marc Maxwell; Youth of the Year, Willie Ivery; Family of the Year, Donnie and Beth Wisenbaker; Music, the Edwards family; Evangelism, Eric King; Church of the Year, First Baptist Church of Sulphur Springs; Political Award, State Representative Dan Flynn; Encouragement Award, Ricki Elliott; Promise Land Award to Kay Bell, MIchelle Edwards, Clarine Moore, Margie Williams and Sarah Edwards; Faithfulness, Billy Crownson; Business, Net-Data; MLK Media Award, Noah Nelson; Employees of the Year, Gloria Clayton and Vera Dial; Law Enforcement, Lt. Gary McLarry; Spirit of Dedication, Joel Tiemeyer.
The MLK Wife Award will be presented to Hillary Young and the MLK Teachers of the Year are Toi Crook, Silvesta Alexander, Ashanta Alexander and Lawson Crook.
The Spirit of Committment award recipient will be Travis Berry.
MLK Scholars are Sulphur Springs students Zakya Iery, Courtney Crook, Isaac Lamb, Isaiah Lacy, Chaliya Moore, Addison Lamb, Christopher Miles, Chanti Hill, Triniti Hill and Larry Prior.
MLK Scholars from Texas A&M-Commerce are Bryon Tennison, Thris Greer, Victor Foreman, Markeith Wilburn, Michael Edmond, Unswella Ankton, Shelia Thomas, Shanequa Irving and Marchell Williams.
Program personalities will include Alva Adams, Dr. Dan Jones, Mick Trusty, Rep. Dan Flynn, Judge Robert Newsom, Kerry Craig, W.C. Pryor and Pastor H. B. Nash.
The public is invited to the free event and refreshments, provided by Alliance Bank and Wal-Mart, will be served following the program.
