Ceremonies marking the opening of the Hopkins County Veterans Memorial are planned for Saturday, June 30, according to Hopkins County Veterans Memorial Committee member Pam Elliott.
The formal opening of Hopkins County Veterans Memorial will coincide with the annual Independence Day Concert and Fireworks Show on the downtown square, which begins at 3:30 p.m. that day.
“Our program for the opening will start about 5:30 p.m., and the symphony starts about 7 p.m.,” Elliott said.”
Although the Veterans Memorial project has received a lot of financial support, Elliott said there is still a long way to go.
She reminds there is still time to order a brick paver for the walkway in front of the water wall feature at the rear of the memorial. Orders will need to be placed no later than the end of April for the pavers to be ready in time for the opening.
The cost of a paver is $300, but there is a discount for those who sponsor the name of a veteran on one of the memorial walls or is going to sponsor a veteran.
“They can include that in their $300 — that's $50 for the sponsorship donation and $250 donation for the brick paver,” Elliott sasai said. “You can honor a veteran there.”
Statements or messages of up to 84 characters can be engraved on the pavers. There is room for four lines, with each line taking up to 21 characters, which includes letters, numbers, spaces and punctuation.
The deadline for the first round of names that will be honored on the memorial’s walls ended March 1, and the turnout resulted in almost 3,000 names of veterans being sponsored.
The next round of names of veterans for the memorial will be taken through the end of August.
“We are taking names now for the September 1 cutoff, which will be engraved in the fall,” Elliott explained.
