The Hopkins County Junior Market Livestock Show, sponsored by Northeast Texas Livestock Association, kicks off Thursday, providing local 4-H and FFA students an opportunity to shine while competing for scholarships and prizes.
NETLA uses proceeds from the Sale of Champions and concession sales to help fund at least two scholarships each year for graduating Hopkins County seniors who have participated in the junior market show for at least two years.
The livestock association will also host a buyers luncheon Tuesday, with students who have participated in the event selected to speak about their involvement.
Cody Vance is one of the students who will speak at the luncheon. Vance is a junior member of the Sulphur Bluff FFA Chapter and has been since fourth grade, when he moved from the city to the Sulphur Bluff community. An animal lover since he got his first dog as a baby — his first word was actually the dog’s name — Vance admitted he’d never even heard of FFA until he moved to Hopkins County.
But events like the junior market show allowed him to raise and show goats and chickens. He hasn’t regretted it. He said since showing his first goat, Bob, he’s loved FFA and really enjoyed working with cows and goats and plans to become a veterinarian one day.
Last year, earned the intermediate showmanship award with his chicken.
Vance is just one of many local youths from all Sulphur Springs and Hopkins schools who will be showing their livestock again this year at the Hopkins County Junior Market Livestock Show Sale.
The show is slated to begin at Hopkins County Regional Civic Center Thursday, with all lamb and goats being weighed in from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. and the lamb showmanship and show at 5 p.m. The goat showmanship and show will immediately follow. Also, all heifers are to be brought to the Civic Center for weigh-in at 7 p.m. Thursday.
The junior market show will get off to an early start Friday. All poultry projects should be in place and checked in by 8 a.m., with the poultry show and showmanship event following at 9 a.m.
All steer and heifers should be in place and checked in at 10 a.m. Friday. Steer weights are due between 12:30 p.m. and 1 p.m. The heifer showmanship and show is slated to begin at 3 p.m. with the steer show following at 6 p.m.
