The Republican ballot for Hopkins County Precinct 3 Commissioner will be a bit shorter in the party primary as one candidate announced plans to formally withdraw from the race.
Alan Screws of Pine Forest said Wednesday morning he plans to contact Hopkins County Clerk Debbie Shirley and county Republican Party Chairman Donnie Wisenbaker today to begin the steps to withdraw from the race.
“When I signed up to be a candidate for Hopkins County Commissioner Precinct 3, I thought I could devote the amount of time needed to properly serve you in this capacity,” Screws stated in a prepared release. “After much prayer and consideration of all my commitments, over the past few weeks, I now realize that would not be possible.
“Our county needs commissioners who can give their undivided time and attention to this office,” the release continued. “It would be a disservice to my family, my business and the people of Hopkins County for me to continue my candidacy; therefore, I am withdrawing as candidate for Hopkins County Precinct 3.”
A former dairyman, Screws was one of the investors who started East Texas Properties Inc. in Sulphur Springs in 2004. He and his wife, Kim, also became co-owners of Pizza Inn in 2007.
Alan and Kim Screws are also well-known to the thousands of children who travel to“The North Pole of Texas,” the Christmas train ride the couple provide annually at their home near Pickton.
He offered “heartfelt thanks and gratitude to everyone who has encouraged me and given me their support,” and offered well-wishes to the candidates still in the race.
Screws’ withdrawal leaves Wade Bartley and Danny Christenberry on the ballot seeking the Republican nomination for the race for Precinct 3 commissioner. The winner of that race in the party primary will likely face Democrat Billy Emerson and independent Andy Wright on Election Day, although filing is still open and others could sign up to run.
