Texas Department of Public Safety troopers identified the man killed early Wednesday in a crash on State Highway 154 as Jeremy Chase Hargrove, 23, of Royse City.
Authorities used fingerprints and other methods to help make the positive identification of the man.
Hargrove was an occupant of a pickup that ran off State Highway 154 south about 5 a.m. Wednesday and overturned, throwing him onto the highway. A woman in the pickup was also injured but not ejected.
Justice of the Peace Yvonne King, who was called to the accident scene, said the driver of the pickup was trying to avoid hitting a deer and ran off the road.
Judge King said a Rowlett fireman/paramedic who lives in Yantis was on his way to work when he stopped to help.
After checking on the woman, she and the firefighter were trying to help the man when they were warned of an oncoming truck.
“The fireman grabbed the young woman and they rolled off the road and into the ditch, but he was unable to get both of them,” King said. “The truck struck the man, and the driver stopped as soon as he could and didn't even realize he had run over the man.”
The woman was flown to East Texas Medical Center in Tyler for treatment. Reports on her condition and her identity were not available at noon Thursday.
