Shelly Slaughter named Cumby ISD superintendent finalist

Trustees for Cumby Independent School District Thursday night selected High School Principal Shelly Slaughter as the lone finalist for superintendent.

“I’m very excited. I’ve been here nine years. I love the community, faculty, staff and kids. I’m excited to work with all of them, not just at the campus level, but as superintendent,” Slaughter said Friday morning. “Everyone here is very supportive and has been complimentary.”

American Cancer Society: Downtown welcomes Relay for Life Friday

Hopkins County Relay For Life will kickoff its 12-hour fundraising walk for the American Cancer Society at 7 p.m. Friday, May 17, with the ceremonial first lap recognizing cancer survivors.

The ACS event is being held for the first time on the downtown square. All proceeds raised go to the American Cancer Society for research for a cure for cancer and toward services that benefit those affected by cancer.

Relay For Life Committee member Johnna West offers a few reminders to teams in preparation for the May 17-18 event on the downtown square. Here’s a quick checklist:

  • Batons will be judged at 6 p.m. Friday.
  • City officials say the square will officially be shut down for RFL until 6 p.m. Friday.

Branded Ranch Rodeo to benefit CANHelp and Community Seeds

A ranch rodeo will be held this weekend to help raise funds for two organizations which provide assistance to others.

The Branded Ranch Rodeo, presented by L3 Communications, will be held at Hopkins County Regional Civic Center Saturday, May 18. In true ranch rodeo style, Saturday’s program will feature competitors showing off their working ranch skills in sorting, a calf scramble, wild cow milking, branding, mugging and bronc riding contests.
