We want to express our sympathy to the family of Mildred Englander, who passed away on Monday. Her funeral service is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. at West Oaks Funeral Home,

with burial at North Hopkins Cemetery. Mildred was a sister to Dorothy Hadley. I’m sure the family would appreciate our prayers, cards and visits. Dorothy is in room 405 at Carriage House Manor, where she has been for several weeks recovering from a fall. Tira volunteer firefighters, along with other departments, responded to a structure fire in the North Caney community over the holiday weekend.

Helen Weir was honored with a surprise birthday party at the Tira Community Center on the afternoon of New Year's Eve. The party was hosted by her children Janie Prahl, Joyce Dodd, Robert Weir and Mary Helen Foster. Others attending included Yvonne Weir and Alice Hall; Michael Dodd McNeil; Tonja Vititow; Maegan, Alyssa and Gavin Shelton; Tanya and Matthew Dodd; Heather Vicars; Von Prahl and grandsons Laredo, Zach and Josh; Tom Foster; Dana Murray and her kids, Kaitlyn and Kaden, and their two step-sisters. Jim and Linda Garner, Betty Weir, Modena Ruth Whitlock and Jan Vaughn were also there. The group was treated to a delicious and beautiful birthday cake, along with punch, nuts and mints. Helen wants to thank everyone for the cards and gifts, and for coming by to help celebrate her birthday.

On New Year’s Day, Robert, Yvonne, Alice, and Helen journeyed to a New Year’s party at Debra Campbell’s in Carrollton. Destri Main, Dacy and Elise Campbell, Dustin Weir and Natalie Kufner were there, along with other friends of Debra. Yvonne says, “We enjoyed several good luck dishes, such as collard greens, black eyed peas, and cabbage with silver coins in it. Hopefully all those things will be effective in bringing us a prosperous new year!”

The Durst family had busy holidays. The Saturday before Christmas, J.R., Donna, Casey, Tiffany and Joseph traveled to Finley, Okla., to have Christmas with Kyle, Amy and Cooper Kitchens. On Christmas Day, J.R. and Donna spent all day at Casey, Tiffany and Joseph's house. They also had the Rich family there. Donna reports, "We all had a great time, with good food!" On Jan. 2, all the Dursts traveled back to Finley, Okla., where they had a big celebration for Cooper's first birthday. Donna's mother and her sister, Karen, and some of her family came from Athens.

Rick and Judy Petty had Christmas dinner at their house on Christmas day. Those present were Chris, Robin, Tyler, Trever and Trey Petty from Cedar Park; Ronnie, Amy, Mitchell and Macy Green from Cooper; Mick and Linda Petty, Betty Lawson, and Billy Joe Clayton, all from Tira; James, Shelley, Reagan and Hesston Humphrey, and Fay Burns from Sulphur Springs; Tara Petty and Mike Owens from Rockwall; and Dorothy Owens from Greenville. Judy says, "We had a great time and sure enjoyed having everyone for the holidays!"

Tyler, Trever and Trey, and Mitchell and Macy spent Saturday night with their grandparents, Rick and Judy. They all went to the movies on Sunday afternoon. Chris and Robin went to the Dallas Cowboys game on Sunday and then spent Sunday night with Rick and Judy.

Mick and Linda Petty hosted a New Year's Day lunch Friday. Those attending were Rick and Judy Petty, Billy Joe Clayton and Bet Lawson of Tira; and Linda’s mom, son and grandson, Fay Burns, James Humphrey and Hesston Humphrey of Sulphur Springs. Linda quips, "I think everyone got enough to eat and had a good time."

The North Hopkins basketball teams will be competing at home on Thursday and Friday this week. Four junior high games against Avery are scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. On Friday, Cumby is scheduled to bring four teams, with two junior varsity games scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m., followed by the two varsity games.

Chip and I spent the New Year weekend at the Piney Shores Resort on Lake Conroe. In spite of the cold weather, we enjoyed seeing all the fountains and lights nearby in The Woodlands. We did a lot of sightseeing on foot, but also rode the water taxi and the trolley. On New Year's Day we met Larry and Dorothy Fitzgerald at the Texas Roadhouse in College Station and enjoyed a nice supper and visiting with them. Chip and I toured the Hogg mansion and gardens at Bayou Bend in Houston on Saturday. The mansion was decorated for Yuletide 2009, with period recreations of historical celebrations. We returned home on Sunday evening after a chilly horse-drawn wagon ride and a relaxing day at the resort. We drove back into Sulphur Springs just in time to attend the wedding reception for Jarrell and Jo (Spencer) Malone at the Davis Street Baptist Church on Sunday night.

I hope everyone is able to stay warm during this cold snap, but I also hope you are out and about making news for next week!
