MILLER GROVE NEWS April 29, 2009

I have several bits of good information to share this week. First, I'll start with the birth of my niece, Savanna Grace Darrow. She was born Saturday, April 25, at Presbyterian Hospital in Greenville. She weighed 7 pounds, 9 ounces and was 20 inches long. She and her parents are home now and doing fine. Happy birthday this week to Mary Lou Akins on April 26, Fred Moseley Jr. on April 28, Dwayne Wren on Apr. 29. May 2 is the birthday of Aaron Baylus, Billy Wren and myself. It will be Aaron's 18th, Billy's 76th and my 26th birthday.
Speaking of Billy Wren, his wife Jean's cancer is now in remission. I know they are thrilled to hear the good news, so I thought I would pass it along.
Happy anniversary to Harold and Trudy (Dickens) Mayers on April 29. Trudy was a previous resident of the Center Point community. She and Harold now live on Junell Street in Sulphur Springs. I've heard that she reads my column every week, so “Happy Anniversary Trudy and Harold!”
The Miller Grove FFA is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year and will have a banquet on May 18. I will have more information about this special event in a week or two.
I will also give more detail on the end-of-year stew in the coming weeks, as well. Attendance has been low for the last few years, so hopefully we'll have a bigger turnout this year.
Saturday is Miller Grove Cemetery's annual Memorial Day services. They usually start the service by 10:45 a.m. and end at noon for lunch. Hopefully, the weather will be nice and we can eat outside. If not, there is always the school's cafeteria. If anyone has family buried in the cemetery, please come out for our morning services and business meeting.
Julita Petty Richardson e-mailed me the other day and told me that several MG folks have been keeping in touch with the Facebook website. Maybe I should check into it and get an account to keep in touch with my friends and previous grads.
Southwest Brokerage has built a new building behind their old building in Cumby. I heard that it was really nice and everyone has their own office.
I would like to extend my sympathies to Claire Knight and family on the passing of Col. Harold Knight. They have lived in the Greenview community for several years. Harold was always a very hard worker. As far as I know, he was still taking care of his cattle up until the time of his passing at the age of 86. He was buried Monday, April 27, in Greenview Cemetery.
