We want to express our sympathy to the family of Dustin Clements. He was involved in a fatal motorcycle accident on Sunday. Dustin was an employee of North Hopkins School, and his funeral was held there Wednesday afternoon.
We also want to extend our sympathy to the family of Mitzi Janway. She passed away on April 18 following an extended illness. I want to express my apologies to the family for leaving this out last week.
The North Hopkins Cemetery Association will hold a clean-up day this Saturday, May 2, at 1 p.m. Joyce Goldsmith says, “Everyone is encouraged to come and help get the cemetery cleaned up before Memorial Day.”
Micah Walker received his Texas Tech class ring at the Texas Tech Alumni Official Ring Ceremony at the Merket Alumni Center this past week. During the ceremony, held every semester, the history of the class ring at Texas Tech is discussed, after which the university president then presents each ring recipient with their ring. The ceremony concludes with members of the Student Alumni Association board of directors leading the group in the singing of "The Matador Song." Micah will graduate in May with a degree in interdisciplinary agriculture. Kevin and Dee Melton and Dean and Margaret Eudy attended the ceremony.
North Hopkins ISD was well represented by students from Tira and the surrounding communities at the Regional UIL Academic Meet held at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches this past weekend. Julia Tamsma placed third in informative speaking; Tori Huffman placed second in editorial writing; Jessica Harry placed fourth in Lincoln-Douglas Debate and fourth in persuasive speaking; Jackie Gold placed sixth in persuasive speaking; Tana Hall placed fifth in informative speaking; and Liz Shaw placed second in L-D Debate, earning a place at the state competition. Also representing North Hopkins at the state meet on May 7-9 will be Tori Huffman and Jackie Gold. Other North Hopkins regional qualifiers included Cheyenne Duke, Christian Calixto, Joy Johnson, Kelley Rumsey, A.J. Aguilar, and Kadee Melton.
