TIRA NEWS Dec. 11, 2013

The trees in Tira were covered with a beautiful layer of ice over the weekend. Unfortunately several limbs were broken and some families experienced a loss of power. Thankfully, we did not have the dangerous road conditions that affected other areas of Texas.

The community Christmas party was cancelled, due to the weather, and will not be rescheduled. Several activities are already on the calendar for the Community Center in December. If your family or group is interested in reserving the center for an event, please check with Janie Lewis, at 903-945-2395, to see if any dates are still available.

North Hopkins School will be hosting the Elementary and Jr. High University Interscholastic League (UIL) meet on Tuesday, Dec. 17th. Students (who are not competing in the event) will be dismissed at noon that day.

Evidently the winter storm kept our Tira residents at home. I didn’t receive any news of activities in the community.

On Sunday, Dec. 1, Doris (Horn, Burkham) Moon was surprised with a visit from several nieces and nephews. Gayla Avanzini of Scottsdale, Ariz., Nancy  Edmonds of Leesville, S.C., and Sherry Sisk of Canton, Ga., had flown into Oklahoma City and visited with Gayla and Nancy’s brother, Mike Lyon, and his family in Shawnee, before coming Sulphur Springs to visit with Doris and her family, Doug and Howard Burkham, Ruth Catherine Morrison and Doug’s wife, Paula. Rick and Cindy Patterson of Rockwall, Rosemary and David Horn of Sulphur Springs, and Chip and I also met the group and enjoyed a time of visiting and eating out together. After dinner the “out-of-towners” made a trip to the downtown square to see the veterans’ memorial and to check out the glass restrooms. Nancy and Gayla are the daughters of the late Rex and Winnie (Horn) Lyon. Sherry and Rick’s parents were the late Wyman and Maxene (Horn) Patterson. David is the son of Rosemary and the late Elmer (Mutt) Horn; and my parents were Aldon and Lucille Horn.

I always need and appreciate input from my friends to help keep me informed of news in our community.
