Richard Bearden, former Tira Volunteer Fire Department chief and City Council member, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 10. His funeral was held at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home on Tuesday, with burial at the Tira Cemetery.

We want to extend our sympathy and prayers to the family. Memorials may be made to the Tira Cemetery Association, c/o Floyd Payton, 1601 County Road 4612, Sulphur Springs, Texas 75482.

We also want to express our sympathy to the family of Jacque Lesley, who passed away on Saturday, Aug. 10. Jacque worked for several years at Jess Orr's - Joe Bob's in Birthright. No formal services have been planned at this time. Please remember the family in your prayers.

Students will return to class at North Hopkins School on Monday, Aug. 26. On Thursday, Aug. 22, students and their families are invited to “Meet the Teacher” at 6 p.m. for elementary and 7 p.m. for junior high and high school.

William and Joyce Dodd's son, Michael, came for a visit on Saturday. Joyce reports that she, Michael, Brad and Rob Dodd, Jeannie Mize and her children Cody Mize and Leah Helm, and a friend and his daughter also enjoyed the afternoon together with Dorothy Hurley in celebration of her birthday.

Tanya and Matthew Dodd, along with Tanya's daughter, Tiffany, and her two daughters, were in Kentucky for a few days last week visiting with Tanya's son and his family. They saw a lot of rain on their trip.

Bessie and Tom Ballard of Richmond  visited with Sandra Wester Friday night and Saturday afternoon. Bessie is a former student from Corsicana and she and Sandra have kept in touch over the years. Sandra says they had a good visit and it was fun seeing pictures of Bessie and Tom's children and grandchildren. Bessie and Tom enjoyed exploring the square in Sulphur Springs Saturday morning and Saturday evening.

Michael and Tracy Horn's daughters Jordyn, Madison and Lani, spent a few days with their grandmother, Liz Rawson, while Michael and Tracy were in the process of moving their family from California to San Antonio. Liz and the girls met Tiffany, Kenden and Jaidyn Joslin and Chip and me at the ROC in Sulphur Springs on Tuesday, Aug. 6, and enjoyed playing games and eating pizza. Carol and Jessica Cowley came by for a visit, too. On Saturday afternoon Chip, Tiffany, and I visited with Michael and his family and Tracy's mother, Susan, at Liz's house. Some of the group enjoyed a few games of 42.
