Mark Hixon reports, "While going to Sulphur Springs last Wednesday, I found an injured bird on FM1536, picked him up and he was a male Yellow Billed Cuckoo. These are extinct in California and endangered here in the other southern states. I contacted Rogers Wildlife Rehab Center in Hutchins, Texas, for retrieval and medical attention. This bird had been shot with a shotgun. He died later that night.” Mark would like to advise readers to be careful of their targets — “especially birds that don't have regular hunting seasons for them."

The family of Bob and Myrtle Lawrence met at the Tira Community Center for their 29th annual reunion. Georgia Smith comments, “The group was smaller this year, but we still shared stories about our family.” She reports that they had family from Houston, Fort Worth, Wichita Falls, Grapevine, Mesquite, Belton, Greenville, Sulphur Springs and Tira. They are looking forward to the reunion again next year.

Linda Andrasko came to visit Sandra Wester Thursday afternoon. On Friday afternoon they went to Sulphur Springs to run errands, ate at Juan Pablo's, and then attended Daylee Fite's softball game. Pete and Dorreice (Horn) Shuptrine were in the area on Friday and Dorreice popped in to surprise Mary Rawson at the beauty shop. They had a nice visit.

Tiffany, Kenden and Jaidyn Joslin and Chip and I spent Friday night at Piney Shores Resort on Lake Conroe, and then drove to Sour Lake on Saturday for the first birthday party of Dixie Cartwright. After the party that afternoon, we, along with Dixie and her family, went to Galveston and swam in the Gulf of Mexico. We enjoyed watching Dixie play in the sand and water. We spent Saturday night in Beaumont and the kids enjoyed playing in the hotel pool the next morning. We visited Dixie and her family again on Sunday and enjoyed a fish fry with them before returning to Tira on Sunday night.

Morgan Joslin was involved with the Young Eagles event at the Sulphur Springs Airport on Saturday and participated in the Color Guard for a Memorial Day ceremony in Mount Pleasant on Tuesday night.
