Well, the snow is completely gone by now. In a way I do miss it, but in another way I’m glad for things to get back to normal. It was beautiful while it was here, blanketed across everything. I took some pictures of our house and some of the buildings in Miller Grove on Thursday and Friday while the snow was fresh. I don’t think I have ever seen it snow so hard and I know I have never seen it accumulate as much as it did last week. We even called a Weather Day for school on Friday because of the amount of snow that was on the roadways. I think a lot of the kids had fun just staying home playing in the snow!
Saturday, Feb. 20, will be the Miller Grove Water Supply’s annual meeting and barbecue supper. Last year Murray’s BBQ in Cooper catered the meal and it was very good.
Miller Grove’s FFA Chapter has been very busy the last few weeks. They just got back from the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo and will soon be headed to the Houston Livestock Show. The Ag Mechanics team has built several things this year to enter at Houston. Between these two big shows is the Northeast Texas Livestock Association’s junior market show at the Civic Center in Sulphur Springs. Good luck to all of the participants at the county show and at Houston!
Faye Tipps had foot surgery last Wednesday at Presbyterian Hospital of Greenville. She is now in rehab at Hopkins County Memorial Hospital. Feel free to give her a call or stop by to visit her. I know she would be glad to visit with any of you.
I regret to report that Jean (Long) Akins passed away Feb. 11 in Mesquite. Her visitation was Sunday at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home with the funeral services being held Monday at Shiloh Terrace Baptist Church. Dorothy Jean Long was born Sept. 20, 1927, in Cumby, the daughter of Elmer O. and Esther (Roffe) Long. For a time the Long family lived near Miller Grove and Jean married a Miller Grove boy, Leroy Akins. If you don’t know Leroy I’m sure you know his brother, H.C. Akins. Jean will be dearly missed. I had the privilege over the last few years of visiting with Jean and Leroy several times. Each time I saw Jean the thing I remember most about her is how much she enjoyed laughing and having a good time. She leaves her spouse of 64 years, her children, grandchildren, and brother (R.A. Long).
Happy birthday to Gay Nell Walls and Jim Bob Bishop on Feb. 14, Davy Moseley and Duane Garrett on Feb. 17, and Paul Stewart on Feb. 19.
I did miss one birthday last week. Floyd “Demp” Sturdevant celebrated his 80th birthday on Friday, Feb. 12. Congratulations, Demp! Marlene and Demp moved to Miller Grove from Louisville several years ago and have been active in the community ever since. They are both avid fans of the Miller Grove basketball and baseball teams, and attend Brashear Baptist Church.
