“You are only as young as you feel” and “Age is only a number” are quotes that you always hear when you speak about people having birthdays. This week there were birthday receptions in Sulphur Springs on Saturday, Feb. 6, for two people who are very youthful for their ages. Happy Birthday Elaine (Marable) Garmon and R.A. Long. May each of you have many, many more to celebrate!
Elaine Garmon celebrated her 80th birthday with a surprise celebration at the Presbyterian Church on College Street. Elaine said that she thought she was being taken out for lunch, but when they arrived at the church in Sulphur Springs she couldn’t figure out why she was brought there. To her surprise she soon found out! Even though I didn’t get to stay very long I did notice Woody and Gail Garmon, Geneva and Kay Stripling, Truman and Wanda Renshaw, and of course Elaine’s family. I could tell that there were many more folks there; quite a few that I did not know. Elaine’s birthday is on Feb. 10. Happy birthday Elaine!
R.A. Long’s 90th birthday reception was held at Trinity Church of God’s Family Life Center at 2 p.m. The building was decorated in red and white. There was a slideshow running while everyone was enjoying the refreshments and visiting. They had a wonderful cake that R.A.’s daughter-in-law, Dottie Long, made. R.A. had a large group of friends and relatives to help him celebrate his birthday. I heard that some even came from as far away as Arkansas to attend this special occasion. The Miller Grove folks that I noticed there were Patsy Yates, Ralph Middleton, Mr. and Mrs. Alton Corbet, and Faye Tipps and family. Happy early birthday R.A.! His actual birthday is this Friday, Feb. 12.
Other birthdays this week are: Linda Bailey and Richard Dannheim on Feb. 8, Clay Smith and Brooke Burns on Feb. 9, Vanessa Tipps on Feb. 11, and Jade Spencer on Feb. 13.
Happy anniversary to my brother and sister-in-law, Bradley and Madison Darrow, on Feb. 9. My cousins, Jeremy and Jennifer Darrow, will celebrate five years of marriage on Feb. 13.
I received good news via email this week. John Sellers sent me an email confirming that the Miller Grove Cemetery has been approved for a historical marker! The last steps in the process will sending payment for the processing of the plaque, waiting for the Texas Historical Commission to write the inscription of the marker, and the actual assembly of the metal memorial that will be placed in the cemetery.
Miller Grove’s Homecoming went well Friday night. There was such a large crowd. I saw several people that I haven’t seen in quite some time. Toby Reeves and family, Sara and Brandon Price, Coy and Patsy Johnson, Lori Combs Northcutt and many others were in attendance. Basketball Beau and Sweetheart honors went to Joey Hegseth and Haley Potts. After the boys’ game the crowning of Homecoming royalty took place. Dakota Regan and Camila Fonseca were second runners-up, Chance Lee and Ashley Millard were first runners-up, and Joey Hegseth and Shaye-Lynn Emerick were named king and queen. Congratulations to all who were on Homecoming Court this year!
