We have received our fair share of rain this week. I have enjoyed it, but it would be nice for it to let up long enough to mow the yard.
I have several items to talk about this week, so let’s get down to business.
First off, my dad (Brett Darrow) had surgery on his hand Monday morning. The surgery went well, but the doctor had to remove a section of flesh around the cancer that was the size of a half-dollar. Dr. Hines did a skin graft from my dad’s arm onto the spot that he removed from his hand. It is a little swollen now, but he says that it doesn’t hurt. I guess that’s a good sign.
Sunday after church my mother, brother, niece and I went to Y’all Come Back Café in Emory. We usually see a few people that we know while we are there but we got there a little later than usual and didn’t notice anyone that we knew.
Sharon Tallant took my grandmother to lunch after church. They also went to Emory, but they ate a Don’s. My grandmother really enjoyed their fried fish and brought a few pieces home for her supper.
Faye Tipps and I went back to Golden for sweet potatoes last Wednesday, and I guess the third time was the charm. We came home with five 40-pound boxes of sweet potatoes. We didn’t keep that many, however — several people had asked me to pick them up a box for them. I was so hungry for some good sweet potatoes that I made a sweet potato pie this weekend. Speaking of sweet potatoes, that reminds me that my great-grandfather used to call them “doolie-taters.” I don’t know if a lot of people used to call them that or if that was just what he called them.
Monday afternoon, as I was driving home from work, I noticed two of the volunteer firemen working on hanging the new sign on the front of the fire station. Tuesday morning the new sign was up and looking great. If you haven’t seen it you’ll have to notice it the next time you pass by.
I don’t know of too many birthdays this week. I’ll send Happy Birthday wishes out to Don Petty and Johnny Lennon on Oct. 13, and Sherry (Ragan) Dial on Oct. 15.
Miller Grove’s 2010 Yearbooks are on sale this week. Take advantage of the lower price by ordering them now instead of when they are shipped from the printers in the summer.
The volleyball team has been wracking up a few wins on the court lately. The Varsity Lady Hornets plucked the Yantis Lady Owls Friday afternoon in a fast and furious volleyball game. We won the first three sets even though Yantis put up a good fight! There were a few “boos” from Yantis’ side when Mrs. Irby made some calls as a linesman. Tuesday afternoon we served up another win when we played Greenville Phoenix school. All three sets were in our favor for this game, too. Congratulations, girls, you did a good job!
Another victory over Yantis took place Monday afternoon. Our junior high girls beat Yantis in two consecutive games. Way to go!
Dan and Rebecca (Plunk) Alexander are expecting another child. They have twin girls and another little girl. Maybe the fourth will be a boy! Congratulations Dan and Rebecca!
The Miller Grove PTO is collecting bingo prizes and stew ingredients for the upcoming fall carnival. This year the carnival will be held on Friday, Oct. 23. More details on the carnival next week.
