James and Rita Flanagan were in Arkansas last week for the funeral of James' sister, Elizabeth Greer. We extend our sympathy to the family. After returning home, James was hospitalized with pneumonia for a few days, but was released on Tuesday. We pray that he will have a quick, complete recovery.

A fundraiser benefiting the Tira Volunteer Fire Department is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Tira Community Center. An enchilada dinner is being provided by Ta Molly's out of Paris. Serving will begin at 6 p.m. and continue “'til gone.” A silent auction will be going on throughout the evening, too. Please make plans to attend and show your support for the firefighters.

Several of the ladies of the North Hopkins Class of 1961 met at Los Mochis in Sulphur Springs for lunch on Thursday and to celebrate the upcoming birthday of Wynelle Lawson Belz. Those attending the lunch were Jo Nell Crowson Willis, Mary Sue Palmer Clayton, Virginia (Julie) Price Miller, Catheron Smith Camper, Betty Weir, Sandra   Wester and Wynelle. Everyone enjoyed the lunch and the visit.

Tiffany, Landon and Jaidyn Joslin joined Chip and me and Landon's friend, Chelsie Edwards, attended Rhett Vaughn's first birthday party at Kid's Kingdom in Sulphur Springs on Saturday. Rhett is the son of Josh and Nicole Vaughn. He had lots of other family and friends there and received many nice gifts. We also went to Kathryn Brandenburgh's 80th birthday party at the Church of the Nazarene that afternoon, along with many other well-wishers. Morgan and Kenden Joslin went to Mount Pleasant that day with Chuck Olmsted. They visited one of Chuck's friends, who has airplanes, and they also did some fishing while there and caught several bass. Jerry Wayne and Gail Smiddy spent a few days at their Tira home and Malcolm Joslin helped Jerry Wayne with some projects over the weekend.
