I hope everyone had a good Memorial Day. We have several veterans in the community. I will publicly say “Thank You” for all you have done for our country. I was proud to get a day off of work Monday. It was nice to be able to get caught up on a few things before going back to work Tuesday.
Saturday is the annual End of School Stew. I was talking with Jim Burns a few days back, and he was telling me about the first End of School Stew, which was in 1939. This will be our 70th year to continue this tradition. At one time, each county school had an end of school stew. Some of the first stew makers were Johnie Burns, Chat Corbet, Sebren Johnson, and Ray Garrett. Be sure to come by on May 30 and try a big bowl. I’m sure Lewis Russell will be the stew maker again this year. He always does a good job.
May 31 will be the baccalaureate services for the Miller Grove graduates. Services will be held at 6 p.m. at Miller Grove United Methodist Church.
There are several birthdays to celebrate this week. Happy birthday to Joel Johnson (Richelle Flecker Johnson’s husband) on May 24, Bertha (Davis) Sparks and Genoah “Jody” Knowles on May 25, Billy Lynn on May 27, Jace Potts on May 28, Kathy Lennon on May 29 and Neva (Melton) Lewis on May 30.
Happy anniversary to Kamryn and Derick Petty on May 26. The 27th will be Ro (Flecker) and Mike Hasten’s 7th wedding anniversary. My cousins, Patsy and Billy O’Brien, will celebrate 46 years of marriage on the 28th. Last week I forgot to wish a happy anniversary to Julie and Barry Smith. They were married 26 years on May 21.
When I got to thinking about all of these anniversaries, I thought about how certain gifts were supposed to be given for each different year of marriage. So, I did a little research on what this weeks’ couples would get. Kamryn & Derick Petty would receive cotton (2 years). Ro and Mike’s gift would be copper and wool. Julie and Barry would receive pictures. Poetry would be a gift for Patsy and Billy’s 46th Anniversary. I found the wedding anniversary gift list from www.happy-anniversary.com/ year-of-marriage/index. html in case any of you are interested.
Congratulations to David and Wendy Tipps on the addition to their family. Little Dillon Lee Tipps was born May 19 at Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler. I believe he was named after Dillon McGowan. He was born on his Aunt Connie Briggs’ birthday! He weighed a little over 6 pounds and seems to be doing fine. His grandparents are Stevie and Cheri Tipps. Great-grandparents are Faye Tipps and Floyd “Demp” and Marlene Sturdevant.
Ralph Middleton had a heart attack last week. He is home and doing well now.
Bob and Darlene Flecker will return Wednesday afternoon from a golfing trip to Georgia.
